The buzz on Felix
Posted by Larry Stone
A few stories about Felix Hernandez are emerging from the first day of the GM Meetings in Chicago, and Jack Zduriencik is saying pretty much what he's said all along: The Mariners are fully intent on signing Hernandez, but they are keeping their options open.
Here's one. Here's another, And another. And another.
I don't think Zduriencik is going to make the same mistake as Toronto's former GM,, J.P. Ricciardi, who told the world he was going to trade Roy Halladay, and wound up looking foolish -- and alienating fans and Halladay himself -- when it didn't happen.
The Mariners' first order of business is to make a huge push to sign Hernandez, and I believe that is what they'll do -- make the push, that is. Beyond that, much is dependent on Hernandez's desire to stay in Seattle vis a vis his desire to hit the open market. That's an unknown. If no deal can be worked out, then investigating trade options is the only responsible course for Zduriencik to take. But we haven't reached that stage yet.
