I've figured it out! Danielle Lawrie is Christy Mathewson

As the whole Puget Sound gets enveloped in Husky Softball mania, I've been wracking my brain trying to come to put into perspective the workhorse to end all workhorses, Danielle Lawrie.

It finally dawned on my what she reminds me of: A 19th-century or early 20th century major-league ace. She's Old Hoss Radbourn. Pud Galvin. Kid Gleason.

Those guys pitched day after day, inning after inning, just like Lawrie. Check out Lawrie's season numbers, heading into Tuesday's game, compared to Hall of Famer Christy Mathewson's 1908 season for the New York Giants:

Lawrie:

45 starts, 41 complete games, 19 shutouts, 315 innings pitched, 140 hits, 46 runs, 65 walks, 477 strikeouts, 38-7 record, 0.84 ERA.

Mathewson:

44 starts, 34 complete games, 11 shutouts, 390 innings pitched, 281 hits, 85 runs, 42 walks, 259 strikeouts, 37-11 record, 1.43 ERA.

As I write this, UW is leading Florida, 3-2 in the third. When it's all over, let's hope Lawrie's arm gets a nice, long rest.
