An Enumclaw couple is facing charges in federal court after they were allegedly caught breaking into a bait car at Mount Rainier National Park.

Jamie D. Spain, 39, and Dawn Marie Gale, 44, were arrested early Sunday morning and each charged with theft of government property, theft of personal property and malicious mischief. The two are in custody pending detention hearings later this week.

According to the U.S. Attorney's Office, earlier this month the National Park Service noted an increase in car prowls at the national park. The Park Service responded by setting up several bait cars around the park, including a sedan that was loaded with a cell phone, GPS, satellite phone, digital camera and camping gear. The car was parked at the Crystal Lakes Trailhead on Saturday evening.

At about 6 a.m. Sunday, a park ranger watched as Spain and Gale drove into the parking lot and broke the window on the sedan, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office. Spain removed all the valuables from the car before the couple drove off in their vehicle.

The ranger radioed other rangers, who pulled over the couple. The U.S. Attorney's Office said the couple had the items stolen from the bait car, as well as credit cards, drivers' licenses and a cell phone linked to other car prowls at trailheads in the park and Snoqualmie National Forest.
