Man admits guilt in attack on 81-year-old Rainier Valley woman

Posted by Jennifer Sullivan

A man who authorities say beat an 81-year-old Rainier Valley woman and assaulted her two neighbors on July 30 pleaded guilty Wednesday to multiple criminal counts.

Solomon Xavier Thompson pleaded guilty to one count of second-degree assault, one count of first-degree burglary, two counts of fourth-degree assault and one count of custodial assault, prosecutors said. The last charge stemmed from a fight Thompson had with King County Jail staff after his arrest, prosecutors said.

Dan Donohoe, spokesman for King County Prosecutor Dan Satterberg, said his office plans to ask for an exceptional sentence when Thompson returns to court to be sentenced on Jan. 14. Prosecutors say Thompson deserves a sentence of 12 years in prison because of his lengthy criminal history and the age of his victims.

The standard sentencing range for the crimes could be anywhere from just over six years to just over eight years in prison, Donohoe said.

According to charges in the case, Thompson made his way into the Rainier Valley woman's home by convincing her that he was a furnace repair man. Once inside, he grabbed the woman by the throat, punched her in the head and tore at the blue bathrobe she was wearing, according to charges.

The woman's next-door neighbor, a 70-year-old woman, heard her screams and came to help, the papers say. The victim passed out just as her neighbor arrived to help.

The neighbor also fought with the man; she suffered a black eye and a bloody nose, according to charging papers. The neighbor's 74-year-old husband, hearing his wife's screams, ran over and confronted Thompson in the front yard. The man wrestled Thompson to the ground and managed to strip the younger man's black coat from his back before Thompson ran off, the papers say.

Police were able to lift fingerprints from a cell phone and other items found in Thompson's coat and identified him. Thompson had been released from the King County Jail four days earlier after serving nearly three weeks for a parole violation, the charging papers say.

The day after the attack, Thompson was booked into the Renton city jail on two unrelated assaults. He was transferred to the King County Jail on Aug. 4 after being tied to the Seattle attack.
