Teen sex offender charged with raping girl at Roosevelt High

Posted by Jennifer Sullivan

A convicted sex offender enrolled in Roosevelt High School in North Seattle has been charged with raping a developmentally disabled girl.

Jose Reyes, an 18-year-old junior, was charged May 25 with third-degree rape. Reyes is a Level II sex offender who has previously been convicted of indecent liberties with force in 2007.

According to Seattle police: Reyes dated a 14-year-old freshman for several weeks over the spring. On May 18, he convinced her to skip class and go into a girl's restroom where she was fondled, police say. The girl told Reyes to stop, which he only did when somebody else came into the restroom.

On May 20, the girl told a school counselor what happened, police said. Reyes was then arrested. Prosecutors have requested that Reyes be held on $100,000 bail.

In 2007, Reyes made sexually inappropriate comments to three girls ranging in age from 5 to 11. Most of the incidents occurred in or around the Greenwood neighborhood. He was caught once viewing pornography and masturbating inside the Greenwood Public Library, police said.

After being convicted of indecent liberties as a juvenile in 2007, Reyes was given a nearly nine-month prison sentence, prosecutors said. If convicted of a new crime, Reyes faces up to about 14 months in prison, prosecutors said.

According to Times news partners KING-TV, the district says Roosevelt High was notified of Reyes' sex offender status, but school officials did not have details about his past.

"We're very distressed this incident occurred and concerned about the female involved," Patti Spencer, spokeswoman for Seattle Public Schools, said
