UPDATE: Redmond robber was 'Drugstore Cowboy' author
Posted by John de Leon
Redmond police say one of two men arrested Tuesday night after a pharmacy robbery is the author of the book "Drugstore Cowboy," which was made into an acclaimed film. As first reported by RedmondReporter.com, 73-year-old James Fogle was taken into custody along with second man.
Redmond police spokesman Jim Bove confirmed Fogle's identity and said both he and the second suspect, 45, live in Tacoma. Bove tells Times reporter Christine Clarridge that Fogle is scheduled to be arraigned in King County Superior Court on Thursday.
Bove said police did not know about their famous suspect's illustrious and well-documented criminal background until Wednesday morning. "He's 73 years old and this is probably the only thing he knows," said Bove.
Bove said the target of the robbery, a Pharmaca Integrative Pharmacy in the 158th block of Redmond Way, was probably not the best choice. "It's in between a QFC that's open 24 hours a day and a busy Trader Joe's," he said.
At around 9 p.m., two men walked into the pharmacy and demanded drugs. The two men, who police described as armed, began tying up employees and ordered one employee to turn off the store lights. The employee went to the front door and told a passerby to call 911 while turning off the lights, according to police.
At around the same time another employee triggered a silent alarm, police said. Officers responded and arrested the two men at gunpoint for investigation of first-degree armed robbery.
Police said three Pharmaca employees in the store were not injured.
"While you never want to see something like this occur, everyone involved handled this exactly how they should have," Bove said in a news release.
Fogle wrote the book "Drugstore Cowboy" about his life as a drug-addicted pharmacy burglar. Filmmaker Gus Van Sant made the then-unpublished book into the 1989 movie "Drugstore Cowboy," starring Matt Dillon. The film opened to universally laudatory reviews, and won awards that included Best Screenplay of 1989 from the L.A., New York and national societies of film critics.
Even after penning the book, Fogle has been arrested several times for robbery.
Former Seattle Times reporter Kit Boss profiled Fogle in this 1992 story.
