Pedestrian killed when hit by bicyclist identified
Posted by John de Leon
-- From Times staff reporter Sara Jean Green:
The King County Medical Examiner's Office on Wednesday identified Velda K. Mapelli as the 83-year-old Renton woman who died after being struck by a bicycle late Sunday afternoon.
Mapelli died from blunt-force injuries to her head and torso, according to death investigators. Her death was ruled an accident.
Just before 5 p.m. Sunday, Renton police were called to a collision involving a bicyclist and pedestrian on the Cedar River Trail, according to police Cmdr. Paul Cline.
Mapelli was walking east on the trail and two cyclists, also eastbound, came up behind her and off to her left side, Cline said. As the cyclists began to pass Mapelli, she stepped in front of one of them and was struck, Cline said.
Both Mapelli and the 57-year-old cyclist who hit her were knocked unconscious, but the male cyclist was treated at the scene for minor injuries. Mapelli died Monday at Harborview Medical Center.
The Associated Press reported earlier this week that the cyclist will not face an infraction or a criminal charge in connection with the collision.
