Federal Way man charged in mother's death

Posted by Jennifer Sullivan

A Federal Way man who police say shot and killed his 88-year-old mother earlier this week before shooting himself has been charged with first-degree murder.

Jerry Thompson, 65, allegedly shot his mother, Alberta Thompson, inside the home the two shared in the 30200 block of 26th Place Southeast, according to court charging documents. A friend of Thompson's called police on Wednesday to report that the man had been depressed and that Thompson had recently said that "things were getting to the end," charging papers said.

Federal Way police went to the Thompson home that afternoon to check on him and found his mother dead on the floor and her son lying on the living room floor, court papers said. Thompson was taken to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle for a gunshot wound to the back of his head.

Police found a note inside Thompson's wallet that read: "This is all because of me - not mom. I've been sliding to the edge for months, Finally dropped off. So sorry to my sister & all my family. Jerry."

Thompson's friend told police that when the men recently met for coffee Thompson gave him contact information for his neighbor and his sister, charging paperwork said. The man suggested that Thompson take medication for his depression and Thompson refused, charging papers said.

Thompson's friend told police that Thompson was upset with his employer over a real estate deal and because of the end of a 20-year romantic relationship, court paperwork said. Thompson was also upset because his mother's health was failing and he didn't know how he could afford to care for her.

King County Senior Deputy Prosecutor John Castleton is asking that Thompson be held on $1 million bail when he is released from the hospital. Thompson has no prior criminal history, Castleton wrote in charging paperwork.
