'Santa Claus burglar' now facing criminal charges

Posted by John de Leon

-- From Times staff reporter Brian Rosenthal:

Bail has been set at $100,000 for Shon Michael Shanell, 23, who police say became stuck in the chimney of a Seward Park home on Friday evening during a botched burglary attempt, according to court documents. Shanell has been charged with attempted residential burglary.

Charging documents allege that Shannel put a chair on top of a central air conditioning unit to get on the roof of the home. The documents also disagree with an initial police report that indicated the man was in the chimney for three hours before being freed. It turns out he was stuck for six hours.

After pulling the man from the chimney, police immediately dubbed him the "Santa Claus burglar." Veteran cop Lt. Kerry Guynn remarked: "This is my 42nd year as a cop. I ain't never seen this."

The documents don't explain how he got stuck, but it must have been a small chimney. Shanell is listed as 5-feet-9 and 155 pounds, according to charging documents.

Arraignment is scheduled for March 4 at the King County Courthouse.

Shanell has a criminal history that includes convictions for possession of a stolen vehicle and drug violations, according to charging documents. The documents say the alleged Santa Claus burglar had just been released from jail on an unrelated possession of a stolen vehicle charge on -- you guessed it -- Dec. 25.
