Daily News: The handcuffs were a dead giveaway

Posted by John de Leon

The woman who knocked on the door of a Clallam Bay home Tuesday night and asked for help must have looked suspicious right from the start.

For one thing, she was wearing handcuffs.

The woman had earlier fled from a State Patrol trooper after she was arrested on suspicion of drunken driving. She ran to a nearby home while still in handcuffs and knocked on the door, according to the Peninsula Daily News. "She told them she had been arrested and needed some help," State Patrol Trooper Krista Hedstrom tells the Daily News.

The couple called 911 instead.

The woman, identified as Amanda L. Leiza, 26, of Neah Bay, was being driven by Trooper Eric Tilton to the Clallam County jail in Port Angeles after her arrest for drunken driving. The woman asked for tissues near the intersection of state highways 112 and 113.

Tilton stopped the car and went around the vehicle to hand them to her, but she bolted from the car and ran off while still in handcuffs. This sparked an hour-long search that ended when the couple called 911 to report the handcuffed woman at their door.

"The couple was nice enough to call the police when she showed up their house looking for help," Hedstrom tells the Daily News.
