Kitsap Sun: Trial begins for teen charged with $12 million arson
Posted by John de Leon
The trial begins today for a 17-year-old boy charged with the July 27 arson that destroyed Arnold's Home Furnishings in Bremerton, resulting in $12 million in damage, the Kitsap Sun is reporting. The boy is charged as a juvenile with first-degree arson and could face between 25 and 32 months in juvenile detention if he is convicted.
The Kitsap Sun -- like The Times -- does not typically name criminal defendants who are charged as juveniles.
The judge in the case ruled Friday that alleged statements the boy made to police about the fire will be admissible at his trial. The statements, including alleged confessions, were "voluntary and reasoned decisions," Kitsap County Superior Court Judge Leila Mills said, according to the Sun.
Mills ruled that detectives properly issued the suspect his Miranda and juvenile arrest warnings and that he was provided ample food and breaks during the interrogation. The actual questioning lasted about five hours.
The suspect was 16 when he was arrested Sept. 10 in Belfair.
