Man found guilty of stabbing pregnant girlfriend

Posted by John de Leon

A jury in Seattle has found a 25-year-old man guilty of first-degree assault for stabbing his pregnant girlfriend in August 2008. Carlos Diaz-Galvin was also found guilty Wednesday of unlawful display of a weapon and acquitted of two other counts: third-degree assault and fourth-degree assault.

Diaz-Galvin faces standard sentencing range of nine to 12 years in prison. The King County Prosecutor's Office will seek an exception sentence of 20 years.

Hortencia Salas, 37, was more than five months pregnant when she was stabbed and pushed down a set of stairs outside her Wallingford home. Salas was rushed to Harborview Medical Center, where doctors saved her and her unborn child. The boy was born in December, prosecutors said.

Deputy Prosecutor Tomas Gahan said that Diaz-Galvin had been drinking before he hit Salas' 11-year-old daughter, chased the girl out of the house and attacked Salas. Gahan said that Diaz-Galvin also kicked a police officer and threatened Salas' neighbor with a knife when the man tried to help the injured woman.

The charges Diaz-Galvin was acquitted on involved the alleged assault on the girl and a police officer who responded to the scene.

Testimony in the trial began on Sept. 8.
