Second-degree murder charge filed in Mount Baker slaying
Posted by Jennifer Sullivan
A 29-year-old man accused of fatally shooting a 31-year-old man in Seattle's Mount Baker neighborhood last Thursday has been charged with second-degree murder.
Curtiss Ware Jr. shot Melvin Evans after they argued over money, according to charging papers filed Tuesday in King County Superior Court. A man who witnessed the shooting told Seattle police that Evans had called Ware just before 3 a.m. and they soon met up on a sidewalk near South Byron Street and Rainer Avenue South.
The witness told police that he heard Ware yell and curse at Evans and when Evans turned to walk away he was shot, charging papers said. Witnesses reported hearing about five gunshots.
A homeowner nearby provided police with video footage from a home security system. The footage showed a man in a white T-shirt shooting Evans then running away, according to charging documents.
Ware was arrested later that night . Police also arrested his 20-year-old girlfriend, Jenita Freeman.
Freeman has been charged with rendering criminal assistance. When she was questioned after Evans' slaying she told police that they had been together the entire night, court charging papers said.
