Man who allegedly shot father charged with second-degree murder

Posted by Jennifer Sullivan

Tai Duc Thong, the 29-year-old man arrested early Sunday in connection with the fatal shooting of his father, was charged today with second-degree murder.

Thong is being held at the King County Jail in lieu of $1 million.

Thong was arrested after dialing 911 to report that he shot Thomas Thong in the face and in the back, according to court charging papers. When police arrived at the Thong home, in the 9000 block of 39th Avenue South, they found the wounded man. He was taken to Harborview Medical Center and pronounced dead; he suffered four gunshot wounds.

Thong's mother, who also dialed 911, told police that she and her husband were asleep when their son entered their room around 2 a.m. "in a panic" and told them to get dressed because they were in danger, charging papers said. Thong told his father to go to the safe and take out a gun, Thong then grabbed the gun and rushed his parents to their car and told them to head to his sister's house, charging papers said.

But once the couple reached the car, Thong said that they were in danger. Thong took off a bulletproof vest, gave it to his mother then turned and shot his unarmed father several times, charging papers said. Thong then ran to the phone to call for help.

Thong told police that he had smoked PCP and marijuana before the shooting, the charging papers said.
