Teen pleads not guilty in slaying of Ballard store clerk

Posted by John de Leon

-- From Times staff reporter Phillip Lucas:

A 17-year-old boy charged in last month's slaying of a Ballard convenience store clerk pleaded not guilty this morning to first-degree murder.

Elijah Hall entered the plead during a brief arraignment in King County Superior Court. Hall, who is being prosecuted as an adult, could face a sentence of between 20 and 26 years in prison if convicted as charged.

Hall's family declined to talk with a reporter after this morning's arraignment.

Hall is accused of killing Manish Melwani, 28, a clerk at the Pit Stop Express and 76 gas station, during a robbery on July 26. Hall was arrested the next day at a nearby home.
