Brush fire burning on Everett's Jetty Island
Posted by John de Leon
A fire is burning on the northern end of Jetty Island in Everett. The fire began just before 3 p.m. and is burning through 8-foot tall bushes, according to Kate Reardon, Everett's public Information director. The blaze measured about 300 feet wide at 5 p.m..
Six Everett firefighters are battling the blaze with hand tools and portable pumps to control the spread of the fire, Reardon said. It is expected that the fire will burn through the night and that firefighting will continue into Thursday, she said.
Jetty Island, owned by the Port of Everett, is a two-mile long, man-made island with sandy beaches and shallow warm water located west of Everett at the mouth of the Snohomish River. Since 1985, the City of Everett Parks and Recreation Department offers Jetty Island days each summer, Reardon said.
Today is opening day of Jetty Island Days, the summer program when visitors are ferried over to the island. The fire is burning along a portion of the island that is rarely used by Jetty Island Days participants, she said.
