Car strikes pedestrian in Highland Park crosswalk
Posted by John de Leon
A 29-year-old man who just got off a bus was struck by a car and critically injured last night near Ninth Avenue Southwest and Southwest Elmgrove Street.
At 10:10 p.m , a 1995 Chrysler Le Baron driven by a 51-year-old man was traveling north on Ninth Avenue Southwest approaching Southwest Elmgrove Street just as the 29-year-old man got off a Metro bus at a bus stop on Ninth Avenue Southwest. As the younger man was on an unmarked crosswalk on Ninth, just south of Southwest Elmgrove Street, he was struck by the Chrysler.
The injured man was taken to Harborview Medical Center with life-theatening injuries.
Police said the driver of the Chrysler showed signs of being under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs. He was taken to Harborview, where a blood draw was completed. He was interviewed and released pending further investigation.
Earlier this week, the city of Seattle released a Pedestrian Master Plan that calls for spending $60 million in the next six years for crosswalks, sidewalks, warning signs, traffic lights, education and enforcement. To read more, click here.
