'Dido and Aeneas'

Canada's Theatre of Early Music, led by countertenor Daniel Taylor, will present a semi-staged production of Henry Purcell's stately "Dido and Aeneas" as part of the Early Music Guild's International Series on Saturday.

Taylor himself will play the evil Sorceress, who plots to wreck the romance between Dido, Queen of Carthage, and Aeneas, the hero of Virgil's "Aeneid" (from which the libretto is drawn). The opera, which dates from the 1680s, is an early landmark in English operatic writing. Allan Kozinn, in The New York Times, praised the "velvety tone ... and power of Mr. Taylor's straightforward countertenor."

8 p.m. Saturday, Town Hall, 1119 Eighth Ave., Seattle; $15-$40 (206-325-7066 or www.earlymusicguild.org).
