Seattle Symphony celebrates life of Alan Hovhaness, our 'West Coast composer'

Gerard Schwarz and the Seattle Symphony celebrate the 100th anniversary of Seattle composer Alan Hovhaness' birth with concerts on March 24 and 26, 2011.

• "Winds of Everest," film about Lou Whittaker's 1984 expedition up the world's highest peak, with a score by Hovhaness. 6 p.m. Monday, Central Library, 1000 Fourth Ave., Seattle; free (206-386-4636 or www.spl.org).

Details about the Seattle Symphony programs on Thursday and Friday:

Thursday: "Jing Diao" by Chen Yi; Symphony No. 7 ("Nanga Parvat"), Symphony No. 2 ("Mysterious Mountain") and Prelude & Quadruple Fugue by Hovhaness; Cello Concerto in B minor by Dvorák.

Saturday: "False Alarming" by George Tsontakis; Symphony No. 14 ("Ararat") and Symphony No. 50 ("Mount St. Helens"); Cello Concerto in E minor by Elgar. (Schwarz will conduct the University of Washington Wind Ensemble, rather than the Seattle Symphony, in Symphony No. 14.)
