Matthew Krashan, director of UW World Series, to retire in 2011

Matthew Krashan, founder and director of the University of Washington's popular and eclectic music and dance series, UW World Series, plans to step down in September 2011.

He brought flamenco artists, classical pianists and theater troupes from around the world to the University of Washington's Meany Theater.

But after 29 years as director of the UW World Series, a popular and eclectic performance program with an annual attendance of about 50,000, Matthew Krashan says he will retire next September.

Krashan, 67, instituted the Meany series, which has presented some 450 artists under his leadership. Rich Stillman, president of UW World Series advisory board, called him "a visionary leader ... able to attract some of the world's finest musicians and dancers to Meany's intimate 1,200-seat hall because of his reputation and deep connections with the artists."

Krashan also created Community Connections, an education and outreach program that serves local students with about 100 free workshops, matinees, residencies and master classes by visiting artists.

Asked to name some favorite acts, Krashan points to some Meany regulars: pianist Murray Perahia, the Emerson String Quartet, the Mark Morris and Alvin Ailey dance companies.

Krashan, who plans to travel and do some community volunteer work after he retires, confirms that arts-presenting outfits like Meany are facing difficulties. He says Meany ticket sales were off 10 percent last year, and the annual budget has been flat, at about $1.8 million, for three years.

But Krashan notes, "When you look at the big picture, you're very thankful for what you have. ... And artists don't stop working when times get tough. If anything, they work even harder."

Krashan will plan the 2011-12 Meany season, and he expects that the UW will mount a search for his successor in midwinter.
