The Short List

What our writers love this week

The book "Live Through This," AMC's "Mad Men" and Working Girl Wines make The Seattle Times Short List of A&E favorites this week.

Books

'Live Through This'

This book by University of Oregon writing professor Debra Gwartney is an unsentimental and ferociously truthful memoir, the story of how Gwartney endured the terror and sadness of her two teenage daughters jumping a train, running far away and living on the streets for years on end. The family is reunited now but the question Gwartney asks herself: "How do you get any kind of control back once it's utterly, totally gone?" will haunt you long after you've finished this one-of-a-kind book.

Food & Drink

Working Girl Wines

From an old barn in Port Angeles rolls Rosé the Riveter, part of the boutique "Working Girl" series from female-owned Olympic Cellars. The sprightly label lets you know you're in for some fun; the wine doesn't disappoint, with full, sweet fruit tones and just a touch of tart. Drink it chilled, with cheese or cold meats (www.olympiccellars.com).

TV

'Mad Men'

The fourth season of AMC's popular dramatic series begins at 10 p.m. Sunday, setting the stage with the episode's first words: "Who is Don Draper?" We've been trying to figure that out for a while now, but we do know that Draper (Jon Hamm) will sidestep any personal questions by an Advertising Age profiler. It's now 1964, almost a year since last season ended with Draper jumping ship to start a new company while his wife flew to Reno to get a divorce. (See related story, page H2.)
