Native Americans unite to close AYP celebration

A Friday night concert unites Native-American artists to close the 100th anniversary of the Alaska-Yukon-Pacific Exposition.

Tribute to the Spirit: Little Big Band

Native-American artists bring the 100th anniversary of the Alaska-Yukon-Pacific Exposition to a close with a concert Friday night that ranges from funk-rock to otherworldly violin and flute. Topping the bill is Little Big Band, a group that blends spoken-word fare with sounds straight out of 1970s soul disco (curious fact: glass artist Preston Singletary is the band's bass player). The concert lineup also includes storyteller-musician-dancer Gene Tagaban (doubling as emcee), flutist Philip Charette and Swil Kanim The Violindian, whose string sounds tap both Native and Western traditions. 7:30 p.m. Friday, Meany Hall, University of Washington, Seattle; $5-$20 (tickets: 800-838-3006 or www.brownpapertickets.com; information: www.washington.edu/burkemuseum/events).
