Look for an 'Act of God' this week in Seattle

Elton John and Billy Joel, author John Irving and the movie "Act of God" top The Seattle Times' list of arts highlights this week.

Movies

'Act of God'

For a Halloween movie that's completely different, check out Canadian filmmaker Jennifer Baichwal's scary and surprisingly philosophical documentary about people who have been struck by lightning or had a very close call. It's playing at SIFF Cinema through Thursday. For showtimes, go to H7. For John Hartl's recent 3.5-star review, go to www.seattletimes.com/movies.

TV

'V'

A "re-imagining" of the '80s sci-fi series returns to television with a great cast (Elizabeth Mitchell, Scott Wolf and Morena Baccarin as the creepy/alluring "Leader of the Visitors") and all sorts of fancy FX. 8 p.m. Tuesday on ABC.

Pop music

Elton John & Billy Joel

Two pop legends. Two nights. And the best seats will cost you almost two C-notes. Hey: No one said stargazing came cheap. 7:30 p.m. Wednesday and Saturday, KeyArena, Seattle Center; $54-$179.50 (800-745-3000 or www.ticketmaster.com).

Theater

'The Fully Monty'

One of Seattle's most energetic fringe outfits bumps and grinds its way through Terrence McNally and David Yazbeck's comic play. This Thursday through Nov. 28, 1117 East Pike St., Seattle; $12-$15 (800-838-3006 or www.brownpapertickets.com).

Classical music

Vogler Quartet

Founded in East Berlin before the fall of wall, this quartet — still in its original configuration — has developed a following worldwide. 8 p.m. Wednesday, Meany Theater, University of Washington campus, Seattle; $20-$34 (206-543-4880 or www.uwworldseries.org).

Dance

Pacific Northwest Ballet

"Director's Choice" is a program of short dances, including "West Side Story Suite" and audience-favorite "Mopey." One piece to anticipate: the world premiere of Val Caniparoli's "The Seasons," set to music by Alexander Glazunov. Thursday-Nov. 15, McCaw Hall, Seattle Center; $25-$160 (206-441-2424 or www.pnb.org).

Literary events

John Irving

The author of "The World According to Garp" and "The Cider House Rules" discusses his newest book, "Last Night in Twisted River," with Seattle Times book editor Mary Ann Gwinn. 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Third Place Books, 17171 Bothell Way N.E., Lake Forest Park; free (206-366-3333 or www.thirdplacebooks.com).

Visual arts
