'Memphis' goes to Broadway

"Memphis," the 1950s-set musical that had a pre-Broadway tryout this year at the 5th Avenue, is going to Broadway, opening at the Shubert Theatre on Sept. 23, 2009.

The new musical "Memphis," about a white radio DJ in the 1950s who champions black music in the segregated South, is heading to Broadway.

Created by author-lyricist Joe Pietro and composer-lyricist (and Bon Jovi band member) David Bryan, "Memphis" had a popular run at Seattle's 5th Avenue Theatre earlier this year. It is set to open at the Shubert Theatre Sept. 23.

At the 5th Avenue, "Memphis" starred Seattle-area native and Broadway veteran Chad Kimball. Casting for the New York production will be announced later.
