Anne Frank had her diary; Sala Garncarz had pictures, letters and official documents — all carefully hidden from guards during her five years in a Nazi work camp.
The artifacts, capturing the turmoil and grief of imprisoned Jewish laborers, will be on display April 6 through May 30 at Hillel UW, 4745 17th Ave. N.E., Seattle.
"Letters to Sala: A Young Woman's Life in Nazi Labor Camps" is a traveling exhibit of 100 postcards, letters, photographs and documents that are part of The New York Public Library's archives.
Garncarz worked in labor camps from 1940 until their liberation in 1945. She kept her papers a secret for nearly 50 years until she revealed them to her daughter, Ann Kirschner, in 1991. Kirschner's book, "Sala's Gift: My Mother's Holocaust Story," was published last summer.
The free exhibit is open from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Thursday, and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Friday. For information, call 206-527-1997 or visit www.hilleluw.org.
