Life after reality TV: Shannon 'Shambo' Waters, Blake Lewis, Jason Mesnick and more
Life after reality for: "American Idol" finalist Blake Lewis, "Survivor" contestant Shannon "Shambo," Dancing With The Stars" winner Apolo Ohno, "The Bachelor" Jason Mesnick and America's Best Dance Crew" finalists Massive Monkees
Seattle Times staff reporter
At press time, Renton's Shannon "Shambo" Waters was still in the hunt for $1 million on "Survivor: Samoa." But that was before two contestants were due to be voted off the island Thursday night.
Waters, a fan favorite, says her goal on the show has been to make others smile.
"I spent my entire life lifting others up," said Waters. "If somebody had a bad day, and they're scowling at you, smile at them instead."
After "Survivor," Waters hopes her reality status will grant her wish of cooking with Al Roker of NBC's "Today Show." And she plans to keep working — in sales at Bargreen Ellingson Restaurant Supplies, Equipment & Design.
"Survivor: Samoa" concludes next Sunday. For updates, go to www.seattletimes.com/entertainment.
In the meantime, here's the lowdown on a few of the Northwest's other best-known reality-TV stars.
Blake Lewis, finalist, "American Idol"
"Stay true to yourself," Lewis now advises wannabe reality-show contestants. "Smile for television and never be negative."
The 28-year-old released his second album on Tommy Boy Records last month. RCA Records dropped him when staff who worked on his first album were fired, but it may have been for the best. The show celebrated his individuality, but the label "boxed him in," he said.
Now, instead of looking outside for acceptance, the Bothell beatboxer is concentrating on his roots. Lewis is currently producing a compilation album filled with such local stars as the Blue Scholars.
"This time around I have a better album and a better attitude," said Lewis.
Jason Mesnick, star, "The Bachelor"

After withdrawing his on-screen proposal to Melissa Rycroft early this year, Mesnick proposed to his final choice last month — Molly Malaney, with a custom engagement ring by Bellevue-based Alvin Goldfarb Jeweler.
"People that get the most out of [reality shows] are ready for an adventure," said the Eastside resident. "If you have set expectations you might be disappointed. If you are looking for an experience few will have, then you are on the right track!"
Lately, he's been working on a dating and community site for single parents: www.jasonsplace.com.
Massive Monkees, finalists, "America's Best Dance Crew"
For these Seattle break dancers, life is the same. But, they do get recognized now on the streets.
"If you're going to do a reality competition you want to be remembered," said Brysen Angeles about his group. Currently, they are touring, dancing at school assemblies and at shows nationwide. They also are working toward their dream of a Massive Monkees dance studio
"Your honest expression of your art and your uniqueness is what will set you apart. ... Don't let fear hold you back."
Apolo Ohno, winner, "Dancing With The Stars"
Ohno currently is training for the next Winter Olympics, his third, in Vancouver this February. The Seattle speedskating star will attempt to add to his pile of five Olympic medals.
