Last seen in CBS' short-lived "Cane," Jimmy Smits is heading back to Miami for a role on Showtime's "Dexter."

Showtime has announced that Smits will appear in 10 of the 12 episodes in the third season of "Dexter."

Smits will play Miguel Prado, described as "an ambitious, charismatic assistant district attorney who comes from one of Miami's most politically powerful and beloved families." Apparently a murderer is on the loose in Miami, and the killer's crimes are beginning to impact Prado and Michael C. Hall's Dexter directly, causing them to become unlikely partners.

"Dexter" will be back on Showtime this fall.

While "Cane" may not have found any traction this past fall, Smits is an 11-time Emmy nominee for his work on "L.A. Law" and "NYPD Blue," winning in 1990.
