Here are answers to frequently asked questions about the nationwide conversion to digital TV Feb. 17, 2009.

Q: I bought my set in the last few years. Is it digital?

A: Typically, newer television sets have digital tuners. Those with screens measuring 36 inches and larger made since July 2005 have been federally required to include digital tuners; those sized 25 to 35 inches since March 2006; and remaining sets as of March 2007. (Retailers selling analog sets manufactured before those dates must disclose the lack of a digital tuner.)

Q: How do I know whether I have a digital set?

A: The FCC advises viewers to check for any of the following: "Integrated Digital Tuner," "Digital Tuner Built-In," "Digital Receiver," "Digital Tuner," "DTV," "ATSC" or "HDTV," on the set or in instruction manuals. Or, consumers may contact the set's manufacturer or an electronics retailer for help.

Q: Do I have to give up my analog TV?

A: No. You can still receive free broadcasts with a converter box, which should be available for sale by early March at an expected cost of $40-$70. (If you subscribe to a cable or satellite TV service, you won't need a converter box.) The National Telecommunications and Information Administration is granting coupons to take $40 off the cost of a box. Coupon distribution begins Feb. 17, with a limit of two per household. They are good for 90 days. Visit www.dtv2009.gov or call 888-DTV-2009 for information.

Q: Where can I learn more about the transition?

A: Check out www.dtv.gov or www.dtvtransition.org or call 888-CALL-FCC.
