More geeks on Mount Rainier, with a "social backpack" (UPDATE)
Posted by Brier Dudley
This may be the geekiest ascent yet.
To call out a Mount Rainier climb by a group of doctors involved with the Swedish organ transplant program -- and raise awareness of organ donations -- a group is heading up the mountain with a "social media backpack" that can stream live from the summit.
The 10-pound backpack includes a satellite phone, webcam, netbook computer and battery pack.
Weather may not cooperate, but their plan was to livestream a conversation about organ transplants from Camp Muir Wednesday evening. Then the backpack would be taken along to the summit for a livestream Thursday morning.
Climbers include Andrew Precht, a transplant surgeon at Swedish; Marquis Hart, director of Swedish's organ transplant program; Udo Schmiedl, a radiologist at Swedish; and Kevin O'Connor, chief executive of non-profit organ procurement group LifeCenter Northwest. Carrying the pack will be Drew Symonds from The Fearey Group P.R. firm.
The "social media backpack" unpacked:
From the mountain, where the group had to turn back at 12,000 feet at 3:30 a.m. because of avalanche warnings:
