Microsoft looking up, hosts Space Elevator Conference

So far this is the Press Release of the Day:

Scientists, researchers and space enthusiasts from throughout the world will gather on the Microsoft campus August 13-16 for Space Elevator Conference 2009, an exploration of the technical, legal and social issues and challenges of building an Elevator to Space. A variety of events are planned for the public, as well as the scientific community, on this revolutionary way to send cargo and humans into space.

Among the events during the conference are a special showing of the film "Orphans of Apollo" and the NASA Centennial Challenge Strong Tethers Competition, with prizes up to $2 million.

There's also a half-day public event called "Space Elevator 101" aimed the layperson on Aug. 15. It costs $40 in advance or $50 at the door, and the full conference costs $300 in advance or $375 after Aug. 1.
