Microsoft just provided an update on when final versions of Windows 7 will be available.

It also confirmed that a discounted "family pack" will be available to consumers upgrading three computers to Windows 7, but prices weren't provided.

The update didn't specify when the software will be released to manufacturing but it's apparently imminent. PC makers will get the software two days after it reaches RTM. Here's when others can download the software:

Aug. 6: Available to ISVs (independent software vendors) and IHVs (independent hardware vendors) "partners" via Microsoft Connect or MSDN. Also available to IT pros with TechNet subscriptions and developers with MSDN subscriptions. The English version will be available Aug. 6 and other languages by Oct. 1.

Aug. 7: Available to Volume License customers with existing Software Assurance licenses via the Volume License Service Center.

Aug. 16: Microsoft Partner Program Gold/Certified Members may download through the Microsoft Partner Network.

Aug. 23: Available to Microsoft Action Pack subscribers.

Sept. 1: Volume License customers without an SA license may buy through volume licensing starting Sept. 1.

Oct. 22: Official launch date for consumer PCs loaded with Windows 7 to go sale at retailers, although systems will probably be available sooner. Pre-ordered copies of the software should also arrive around this date.
