Talk of the Games

The medal standings tell only part of the sports story of what's happening at the Games. For the rest, check out the latest dispatches from The Seattle Times' sports crew of columnists, reporters and producers.

IOC apparently stands for Idiotic Official Comments

Posted by Bob Condotta

You thought the medals were done for the night after the figure skating ended?

Think again, as the gold medal for "stupidest story of the day'' wasn't awarded until late tonight when the AP wrote that "The IOC will investigate the behavior of Canadian women hockey players who celebrated their gold medal by swigging beer and champagne on the ice.''

Here's the rest of the AP story:

Players came back onto the ice more than half an hour after the 2-0 victory over the United States. Still in their uniforms and with gold medals draped around their necks, they swigged from bottles of champagne and cans of beer and smoked cigars.

Gilbert Felli, the IOC's executive director of the Olympic Games, says he was unaware of the incidents until informed by an Associated Press reporter.

He says drinking in public by athletes at an Olympic venue is "not what we want to see" and not a good image for sports values.

Felli says the IOC will talk to the international hockey federation and Canadian Olympic Committee and then "act accordingly."

This is the dumbest story of the Olympics.

As anyone who read my post below knows, I thought it was kind of a neat moment, players who may never have an experience like this again in their lives drinking it all in. And if they drank a little beer and champagne along the way, so be it. I mean, who knew hockey players might drink beer after winning a big event? (And is this the same IOC that sanctions the selling of alcohol at all of its venues, making God knows how much along the way?)

A dozen or so players came out with a few beers, a couple bottles, a stogie or two, hung around on the ice for a little while, took a lot of pictures. One of them drove the ice-resurfacing machine around for a minute or two. I've seen more lawless activity at my local library.

And as for the "public'' that saw this drinking, it pretty much consisted of me and about 25 or so other reporters and a few VANOC employees. Not sure we even qualified as a quorum, let alone a "public.''

To give the IOC some minor benefit of the doubt, maybe it's the AP that deserves blame here for asking for comment.

But if the "act accordingly'' involved is anything other than completely forgetting about this by tomorrow morning, I'll promise to buy the players the next round.
