Norwegian curling pants: If you can't beat 'em, blind 'em
Posted by Jerry Brewer
Since I'm The Seattle Times' new Olympic trousers columnist, it's time I investigate the latest bottoms that people can't stop talking about -- or making fun of -- at these Games.
They're the Norwegian curling pants.
Nothing says "I'm An Olympian, Take Me Seriously" quite like red, white and blue argyle pants. I'd never wear them, but I kind of like them, mostly because they're adding spice to the normally blah curling outfits.
Naturally, those poor, fashion-forward Norway curlers are being ridiculed.
"We saw four clowns coming up and down the ice -- that's a fun thing to do," Sweden's Niklas Edin told reporters Tuesday.
Said Norway curler Thomas Ulsrud: "I didn't expect this fuss about the pants."
The best comment actually came via Twitter. While the United States men's team was playing Germany on Tuesday, alternate Chris Plys tweeted: "Norway has crazy pants. Kickin it retro I guess."
Later on Tuesday, Norway -- crazy, retro pants and all -- beat the United States 6-5. Distraction? Maybe. Or perhaps there's more to the Norwegian curlers than their funny fits.
And just to add one more twist to those bottoms: The team uniform was made by Loudmouth Golf, a California company that dresses a famous golfer often known for things other than his ability to play golf.
His name: John Daly.
