ASU students pitch in to cover M's at spring training

The Seattle Times is trying something a bit different this year at Mariners spring training .

Students from Arizona State University's Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication are supplementing the Times' coverage in Peoria, Ariz.

The program began last year with one team, the Milwaukee Brewers, and ASU students working for that city's daily newspaper. This year it was expanded to four teams -- Seattle, the San Diego Padres, the Brewers and the hometown Arizona Diamondbacks -- with four students covering each team.

Video journalists Alex Paris and Nikki Camarillo and print journalists Jon Kingston and Megan Stewart are your ASU/Seattle Times Mariners coverage team, with former Times sports staff reporter Jose Romero serving as adviser for the program. Photographers Emily Hopwood and Evie Carpenter are also part of the program, advised by professional photographer Roy Dabner.

The crew will be at M's spring training for the duration, except most weekends.
