Seattle U.'s Breanna Salley signs with Storm
Salley, who was suspended for two years by the NCAA, gets a chance to try out for WNBA's Storm.
Seattle Times staff reporter
The Storm signed Seattle University guard Breanna Salley to its training-camp roster.
The 5-foot-11 Salley was suspended by the NCAA the past two seasons for not taking the requisite courses under coach Dan Kriley. While current coach Joan Bonvicini appealed the ruling, Salley continued to practice with the team and train with assistant coach Kristen O'Neill.
Seattle isn't an easy team for a rookie to play for. Storm coach Brian Agler, who's also director of player personnel, retained his top six players from the 2010 championship squad and is known to prefer veterans over rookies.
Salley, the first Redhawk invited to a WNBA camp, simply wants an opportunity. She plans to play overseas and return for 2012 if she's unsuccessful this summer.
"I'm super excited," said Salley, who utilized a tryout during the NCAA Women's Final Four in Indianapolis to show coaches and agents her skills.
The Storm's training camp begins May 15. Teams are permitted 18 active players at the start, but only 11 on the final roster. Agler said he has more free-agent signings to announce.
Note
• Seattle U. announced commitments from five players, including 6-7 post Jessie Williamson of Mount Tahoma High School in Tacoma, who set a state record for blocks in a game with 19. She'll be joined by Garfield High standout Rennee Dillard-Brown, a 6-1 forward; Kenyan Brenda Adhiambo, a 6-foot junior-college transfer; Monique Abbs, a guard from Phoenix; and Kim Flournoy, a guard from San Diego.
The Redhawks return seven players and will also have transfers Talisa Rhea (Oregon State) and Nichole Jackson eligible next season.
