Recession costs Storm an assistant coach

Seattle Storm coach Brian Agler was forced to choose between his assistant coaches because of the WNBA's new limitations on coaching staffs.

Storm coach Brian Agler was forced to choose between his assistant coaches because of the WNBA's new limitations on coaching staffs.

League owners agreed at a meeting earlier this month that each team would have just one head coach and one assistant.

Agler chose to retain Nancy Darsch, letting go of Shelley Patterson, who had been with the team since 2007.

"Shelley did a tremendous job for us and it was a painstaking decision," said Agler, who went on morning walks with Patterson during the season. "Nancy has a wealth of experience, being in or around the league since Day One. She knows the players and knows the team."

Darsch, whose base is in Massachusetts, began her WNBA career as coach of the New York Liberty, leading it to the inaugural championship game in 1997. She also made stops in Washington and Minnesota. Darsch was head coach at Boston College when Agler added her to his staff in 2008.

The coaching-staff cuts were a cost-cutting measure that will keep competition level.

"It's the same reason that every other company has been cutting their expenses," Storm co-owner Ginny Gilder said. "You do what you can to live to fight another day. It doesn't mean it's permanent. But the commitment is to make it through the recession."

Note

• The WNBA released its schedule Thursday, and Agler said the Storm's was the "most demanding schedule that I've ever been a part of." The Storm opens its 11th season May 16 at KeyArena against Los Angeles.
