Storm selects Chelsea Newton in dispersal draft
Veteran guard Chelsea Newton is taken by Storm in draft of former Sacramento Monarchs players.
Seattle Times staff reporter
The Storm selected guard Chelsea Newton in the dispersal draft of former Sacramento Monarchs players on Monday. The Monarchs folded in November, with the team's owners citing a need to focus on the NBA's Kings.
It was a surprise Seattle was able to nab a player with the 10th pick in the draft of eight players. Los Angeles (eighth) and Atlanta (ninth) passed, clearing the way for Seattle.
Brian Agler, coach and director of player personnel, said Newton, who had knee surgery in August, was a player he wanted in 2009. Newton, a five-year veteran, averaged 4.4 points and 1.9 rebounds as a rookie starter for the 2005 championship Monarchs team. She averaged 3.0 points and 1.7 assists last season and has averaged 5.1 points in her career.
"I love her mentality and can't wait to begin working with her in training camp," Agler said in a statement released by the team.
Newton, who is playing in Italy, is a noted defender. She could help Agler establish backcourt depth, a goal this offseason. Free agency opens Jan. 15 and contracts can be signed starting Feb. 1. Olympian Katie Smith is a possible Storm candidate.
The New York Liberty picked Nicole Powell first. Rebekkah Brunson was selected second by Minnesota with DeMya Walker going third to Connecticut and Courtney Paris fourth by Chicago.
