Turning point: A block by Yolanda Griffith sparked a 9-0 game-ending run.
Key stat: Bird scored 13 of her 19 in the fourth quarter.
Next game: vs. Minnesota Saturday, 7 p.m.
CHICAGO — To somebody with her worldly basketball experience, Sue Bird didn't think going against an Olympic teammate was anything too new.
Before the game against the Chicago Sky at the UIC Pavilion Thursday night, she had not spoken with the Sky's Sylvia Fowles yet.
That may have simply been a function of the nature of elite women's basketball.
The fraternity is small enough at the professional level that everybody knows everybody.
"I assume on every team, every player could say they were teammates with somebody at some point," Bird said.
Fowles was a particularly memorable teammate. Not only does the rookie center stand 6-6, but she could dunk and led Team USA in scoring in China.
Playoff tickets
Tickets for Storm first-round playoff games will go on sale Saturday after the game against Minnesota at KeyArena. The game against Minnesota will start at 7 p.m. Tickets start at $14, and will be available online at storm.wnba.com at KeyArena's East box office and at the Sonics and Storm team shop on KeyArena's West Plaza.
For more information about playoff tickets, call 206-217-WNBA.
Notes
• Yolanda Griffith was back home for what was likely her last professional appearance in her hometown. The 38-year-old center, in her 10th and final WNBA season, learned and honed her game on the courts of the South Side of Chicago.
• Sheryl Swoopes, who missed the Atlanta game because of plantar fasciitis in her left foot, played Thursday night. Swin Cash did not participate in the shoot-around, but she made her 26th start of the season.
