Storm Notebook | Stars' Hammon certainly a valuable commodity

Player of the game: San Antonio All-Star Sophia Young roughed up Seattle's Lauren Jackson, forcing the latter into a critical turnover in the waning seconds. Young finished with 12 points and five rebounds.

Reserve of the game: Silver Stars guard Marie Ferdinand-Harris helped her bench outscore the Storm's 28-2 with 14 points on 6-for-9 shooting. She also had five boards.

Digits: Jackson's streak of five consecutive games with double figures in scoring and rebounding ended.

Next: Tuesday, vs. Sacramento, 7 p.m., KeyArena.

A late entry to the race for Most Valuable Player honors could be San Antonio guard Becky Hammon.

Some might scratch their heads, considering the dominance of the Storm's Lauren Jackson and the versatile play of Indiana's Tamika Catchings, but when you look at San Antonio's drastic turnaround from a Western Conference afterthought to powerhouse, Hammon is the key.

A converted shooting guard, Hammon is averaging a team-leading 18.9 points — third in the WNBA — and a league-leading 5.2 assists.

Hammon was picked up in a trade from New York, where she was an All-Star point guard. She's just one of the Silver Stars' newcomers this season, joining veterans Ruth Riley and Helen Darling, and rookie Camille Little. But Hammon is the floor leader who makes coach Dan Hughes' visions become reality.

And San Antonio needed her leadership to become the conference's top team at 16-8.

"I would think Lauren would get it because of the way she has been playing," said San Antonio assistant coach Sandy Brondello, who played with Jackson when the Australian won the 2003 MVP award. "We rely on teamwork, but I would hope that Becky is considered. People look at it differently. I look at it as how has that person impacted their team. One player can't win a championship for you."

Welcome back

San Antonio center Chantelle Anderson, who attended Hudson's Bay High in Vancouver, Wash., made her summer debut after suffering two severe injuries in the past year.

Anderson broke her kneecap last WNBA season, then suffered a torn Achilles while playing in Turkey in February.

She spent some time doing radio and television broadcasting while rehabilitating from the injuries.

She scored two points in two minutes of action Sunday against Seattle.
