Girls Basketball Saturday's state tournament game recapsThe Associated Press CLASS 4A Mount Tahoma 60, Meadowdale 45 TACOMA — Sophomore Shauneice Samms capped a strong tournament with 16 points and 16 rebounds, and Mount Tahoma won its first state trophy with a 60-45 win over Meadowdale on Saturday to finish fifth at the girls Class 4A state tournament. Samms finished with 60 points and 41 rebounds over four days to lead the Thunderbirds (22-7), in just their second state tournament appearance. Tshlene Curry scored 16 points and grabbed 13 rebounds. Curry scored 64 points in the tournament. Mount Tahoma outscored Meadowdale 23-12 in the first quarter and the Mavericks could not recover. The Mavericks (23-4) finished eighth, picking up their 11th trophy and first at the Class 4A level. Marelle Moehrle, Hanna Fjortoft and Caitlyn Rohrbach each scored 12 for the Mavericks, and Moehrle had 10 rebounds. Eisenhower 62, Woodinville 57 TACOMA — Laiken Dollente scored 19 points and, Cassie Robbins 10 points and grabbed 11 rebounds to lead Eisenhower to a 62-57 win over Woodinville on Saturday for fourth place at the state 4A girls basketball tournament at the Tacoma Dome. It was the third trophy for the Cadets (29-2) and their best-ever finish. Courtney Kelleher scored 13 and Claire Faucher 12 for the winners.
Palo led the Falcons with 19 points to finish the tourney with 76. Ashley Tuiasosopo scored 12 and Amanda Best had 10 points and 10 boards. The Falcons finished seventh for their first trophy. It was their second trip to state and first since 1993. University 53, Auburn-Riverside 52 TACOMA — Angie Bjorklund scored 19 points and Dara Zack 16 and, both hit key free throws in the final moments to lead University to a 53-52 win over Auburn-Riverside Saturday and third place at the state 4A girls basketbal tournament at the Tacoma Dome. The win gave the Titans (25-4) their third trophy and best-ever finish. The Ravens (22-7) finished sixth to earn their first trophy in their second state appearance. The Ravens took a 52-50 lead on a Julie Futch basket with 57 seconds left. Bjorklund tied the score with a pair of free throws with 16 seconds left. Auburn-Riverside's Stephanie Wilber missed a subsequent layup. Zack got the rebound, was fouled and made one of two free throws with 5.5 seconds left for the win. Bjorklund, a junior who has already accepted a scholarship to the University of Tennessee, finished the tournament with 76 points. She had five rebounds and four assists as well. Nneka Payne led the Ravens with 16 points and Wilber added 14. Futch, the Ravens' leading scorer who is headed to Oregon State, scored just five points and was 2 of 13 from the field. Lewis & Clark 66, Prairie 44 TACOMA — Quiet for the first three games of the state tournament, junior Katelan Redmon scored 22 points, leading Lewis and Clark of Spokane to its first Class 4A state crown with a 66-44 win over Prairie on Saturday night. Redmon had scored just 18 points the entire tournament before Saturday. The Tigers reached the championship game on the strength of senior Heather Bowman. Against the Falcons, Bowman left the stage to teammate. Redmon made her first nine shots before finally missing a short runner with 4:50 left in the third quarter. At one point in the first half, Redmon had as many points as Prairie's entire team. Bowman, who averaged 18.7 points in the first three games of the tournament and was named the tournament MVP, finished with 16 for the Tigers. Lyndi Seidensticker added 10 off the bench. Katie Madison led the Falcons with 11 points, and Merritt Cameron and Ashley Corral both scored 10. Prairie was trying for its fifth state title, having won the crown in 2003, 1999, 1998 and 1994. The Falcons lost in the finals in 2000 and 2002. The Tigers led by as many as 22 in the third quarter, and finally put away the Falcons midway through the fourth. Leading 53-37 Bowman made a 3-pointer, scored on the baseline, and then Jade Peone made a 3-pointer to push the lead to 61-37. Lewis and Clark took command with an impressive shooting display during the second quarter. The Tigers made five straight shots during one stretch and outscored the Falcons 20-8. Lewis and Clark shot nearly 61 percent in the first half. Bowman scored 10 points, but didn't play the final 3:33 of the half after picking up her second foul. It was Redmon that did the damage. The junior guard was 8-for-8 in the first half and scored 17 points. She scored her 17th point with 4:45 left in the half, giving the Tigers a 33-17 lead. Lewis and Clark won in just its second title game appearance. The Tigers lost to Shadle Park 62-58 in 1988. CLASS 2A Lakeside (Nine Mile Falls) 48, La Center 25 YAKIMA — Kelsey Stillar scored 13 of her game-high 16 points during a third-quarter surge, and Lakeside of Nine Mile Falls ran away from La Center for a 48-25 win on Saturday to take fifth place at the girls Class 2A state tournament. Stillar made three of her four 3-pointers during the Eagles' 23-point third quarter that turned a 20-10 halftime lead into a 43-19 advantage. Lakeside finished 19-7 and placed at state for the first time since 2003, when the Eagles also took fifth. Courtnee Galvin added 12 points for the Eagles, and Kia Gibson pulled down nine rebounds. Brittney Roggenkamp led the Wildcats with 11 points, and Jessie Mansell hauled in a game-high 11 rebounds. Roggenkamp also had five rebounds, two assists, a blocked shot and two steals. La Center ended its season at 19-8. Chelan 56, Woodland 50 YAKIMA — Cassy Pilkinton scored 23 points, and Chelan captured fourth place at the girls Class 2A state tournament with a 56-50 victory over Woodland on Saturday. Pilkinton scored 10 of Chelan's first 14 points as the Goats built an early 18-6 lead before Woodland charged back. The Beavers took a brief one-point lead in the third quarter, but a 3-pointer by Pilkinton gave Chelan a 33-31 lead and the Goats never trailed again. Pilkinton made 8 of 16 shots, including 3 of 5 3-pointers. She also had a game-high nine rebounds, a blocked shot and five steals. Courtney Greenleaf led Woodland with 12 points and seven rebounds. Chelan finished at 25-2, while the Beavers ended 24-3. Pullman 46, East Valley (Yakima) 41 YAKIMA — Jamie Thornton scored nine points and Pullman held off cold-shooting East Valley (Yakima) 46-41 to capture third place in the Class 2A girls state tournament Saturday. The Greyhounds finished 21-5 and captured their first third-place trophy. East Valley, which entered top-ranked and unbeaten, finished at 25-2 and earned a trophy for the ninth straight year at the 2A level. Pullman led most of the game, but never by more than 10 points. East Valley climbed to within a single point twice in the second half, but its cold shooting (12 of 43) was a hampering factor the entire game. Brittnee Lee led the Red Devils with 18 points and was 5-for-10 behind the 3-point arc. Jamie Thornton pulled down six rebounds for Pullman, which outrebounded East Valley 32-22. King's 49, Lynden Christian 27 YAKIMA — Sara Mosiman scored a game-high 17 points to lead King's to its second straight Class 2A girls state championship as the Knights rolled past Lynden Christian 49-27 on Saturday. Mosiman, named tournament most valuable player for the second straight year, scored 12 of her points in the first half as Kings rolled up a 29-15 halftime lead and never looked back. ``Tonight I felt confident, I felt good, so I came out firing,'' Mosiman said. King's won its third overall title, including a 1997 crown in the 1A ranks. The Knights, who finished the season 26-2, defeated LC 63-55 for the Northwest District title on March 4. Sarah Strand added 13 points for King's, including eight in the first half. LC, led by Jenna Reed's 13 points, suffered offensively, making only 9 of 42 shots (21.4 percent) for the game. The Knights grabbed most of those misses, with Strand getting 10 rebounds and Mosiman nine. King's outrebounded LC 43-25. The Lyncs finished the season at 24-3.
