Girls Basketball No. 1 Lincoln falls to Lewis and ClarkSeattle Times staff reporter TACOMA — The magic wore off for Samantha Tinned. But Heather Bowman found some. Bowman buried an eight-foot turnaround jumper over Tinned with six seconds left to lift No. 5 Lewis and Clark of Spokane to a 55-53 victory over top-ranked Lincoln of Tacoma on Thursday in the quarterfinals of the Class 4A state girls basketball tournament at the Tacoma Dome. With one last opportunity to tie or win, the 6-foot-1 Tinned said she was bumped and fell trying to take a pass outside the three-point line, and the ball rolled away as time expired. "This hurts so bad," she said. "We didn't play to our full potential." The Tacoma Dome has been a special place for Tinned, who played in three straight semifinals here while at Garfield, finishing third with the Bulldogs in 2003, second in 2004 and first last year. She was voted most valuable player of the past two tournaments, then transferred last fall to Lincoln because of family circumstances. The Abes (25-2), who had won 20 in a row, can finish no better than fourth. "I feel like it's my fault," said Tinned, who had 12 points, seven rebounds and three blocked shots. For Bowman, a 6-2 senior who has signed with Gonzaga, it was a bit of payback. The Tigers (24-4) lost in last year's semifinals to Tinned's Garfield team. Now they're a step away from the title game again and play No. 10 Auburn Riverside (22-5) tonight at 7 in the semis. "It's kind of a second chance," Bowman said.
"Someone from the bench said, 'Take her,' " she said. Bowman didn't need to be told twice and didn't worry about leaving Lincoln too much time. "I was just happy it went in," she said. That gave Bowman a game-high 16 points. Copyright © 2006 The Seattle Times Company Most read articles
