Mark Niver, 60, died at Pacific Raceways on Sunday after his Top Alcohol dragster ran off the end of the race track.

Niver, who owned a machine shop in Phoenix, died after winning his A-Fuel dragster semifinal heat when his parachute did not deploy after he reached the finish line at 271 mph at approximately 2:15 p.m.

It is the second drag racing death in the last month. Neil Parker, 58, was killed in an Alcohol Funny Car on June 14.

The NHRA Northwest National race was suspended while the accident was investigated by the King County Sheriff's Department.
