The San Diego Chargers placed linebacker James Holt on injured reserve with a shoulder injury on Tuesday and signed Dontarrious Thomas, who played this season in the United Football League.
Holt was hurt in Sunday's regular-season finale against Washington and will undergo surgery. He was used mostly on special teams, with nine tackles in nine games.
Thomas has played in 63 games in five NFL seasons, including 10 starts, with Minnesota and San Francisco. He hasn't played in the NFL since the end of the 2008 season.
This season, he was the leading tackler for the California Redwoods of the UFL. He's been a special teams contributor throughout his career.
General manager A.J. Smith didn't return calls seeking comment.
The AFC West champion Chargers (13-3) earned the No. 2 playoff seed and a first-round bye.
