Twins recall RHP Humber to take Liriano's spot

The Minnesota Twins recalled right-hander Philip Humber from Triple-A Rochester on Tuesday to take the roster spot of lefty Francisco Liriano.

ARLINGTON, Texas —

The Minnesota Twins recalled right-hander Philip Humber from Triple-A Rochester on Tuesday to take the roster spot of lefty Francisco Liriano.

Liriano was placed on the 15-day disabled list Monday night because of fatigue in his left arm.

Humber was due to start for Rochester on Tuesday night, but he was in the Twins' bullpen for the game at Texas. Manager Ron Gardenhire said Humber will also be considered as a spot starter.

Humber was 7-7 with a 5.28 ERA in 21 games for Rochester.

Gardenhire said Liriano, who allowed seven runs and seven hits in two innings of Monday night's 8-5 loss to the Rangers, simply needs some rest.

"There's no soreness or anything like that," Gardenhire said. "He'll continue to do his treatment on his arm. But we're going to shut it down from the throwing to see if we can rejuvenate his arm and his body."

The Twins also designated infielder Matt Macri for assignment to make room on their 40-man roster. Macri has been playing for Rochester.
