Ill Earnhardt putting together backup plan at Indy

A stomach virus couldn't slow Dale Earnhardt Jr.'s No. 88 car in qualifying Saturday.

AP Sports Writer

INDIANAPOLIS —

A stomach virus couldn't slow Dale Earnhardt Jr.'s No. 88 car in qualifying Saturday.

The illness, however, is forcing Earnhardt's team to make contingency plans for Sunday's race.

Junior planned to let potential relief driver Brad Keselowski take the car out for practice later in the afternoon.

Earnhardt said he felt ill Thursday night and has been running a fever and taking intravenous fluids. His biggest concern is staying hydrated enough to complete the 400-mile race at Indianapolis.

Earnhardt said he was feeling better during qualifying, when he ran a lap of 180.567 mph - the third fastest speed of the first 23 drivers on the track.
