Tampa Bay Rays left-hander Scott Kazmir has thrown 44 pitches in a three-inning simulated game and hopes to begin a rehabilitation assignment next week.
Kazmir three 44 pitches on Friday, while also working on his mechanics.
He went on the 15-day disabled list May 22 with a left quadriceps strain. Kazmir said the injury stems from changes to his motion that occurred after he was sidelined with a strained left elbow early last season.
He is 4-4 with a 7.69 ERA this season, and expects to start a minor league rehab assignment with Single-A Charlotte in the middle of next week.
Kazmir went 12-8 for the AL champions last year.
