Mike Holmgren says he'll be back to work in 2010
Former Seahawks coach says he would like to be back in NFL after sitting out the 2009 season.
Seattle Times staff reporter
Mike Holmgren expects to go back to work in 2010, he told KJR 950 AM on Tuesday morning.
Where that will be and what the job will be, however, remains totally uncertain.
"[I'll] take the year off and after next season is over, I plan to go back to work," Holmgren said in an interview with Dave Mahler. "But where and in what capacity, that is really pretty vague. I don't know.
"But I know this: I want to do something. That is pretty much a given."
The news is not a surprise. Holmgren said throughout 2008 that he planned to take the next year off, but he never referred to it as a retirement. In Holmgren's final news conference as Seahawks coach back in January, he said he would be surprised if he did not coach again.
He left open the possibility, however, that he would find fulfillment in the year away from football and not return.
Holmgren coached the Seahawks for 10 years.
He lost general manager responsibilities after 2002 and has previously said he learned from that experience and would like another bite at that apple.
Holmgren's wife, Kathy, indicated in an interview with KCPQ-TV that aired on Sunday that coaching was part of Holmgren's makeup.
"I don't think I realized until he stopped coaching how much a part of him it really was," she said. "I'm warming to the idea just a little bit that he'll be back doing something. Something in sports."
That could be coaching, and it could be a front-office position. The one thing that sounds relatively certain now is Holmgren will be back in some capacity.
