TORONTO — Sounders FC goalkeeper and captain Kasey Keller spoke out in support of teammate Fredy Montero, who didn't make the trip to Toronto because of an illness and may have legal troubles. Seattle won the game 2-0 over Toronto FC at BMO Field.
"I wasn't there, but nobody's been charged," Keller said. "It's just something that obviously, we support our player. Let the police do their job. ... Hopefully it all blows over here and it goes from there. We don't know what's going on, but we're behind him."
According to the team, Montero was too sick to fly with the team Thursday, but was recovering Friday and Saturday. Yet there was speculation Montero stayed back, at least in part, because prosecutors in Seattle are reviewing allegations of rape against Montero.
No charges have been filed against the 21-year-old from Colombia.
Sounders FC coach Sigi Schmid would not comment further on the situation involving his star forward when asked about it after the game. He only cited the club's statement issued Thursday night — that the team is aware of the situation, is gathering information and supports Montero and expects him to play Saturday when Seattle hosts the Kansas City Wizards.
Asked if Montero is feeling better as far as his illness, Schmid wouldn't comment.
Montero scored three goals in the first two games for Sounders FC and was named the MLS Player of the Month for March.
