China hopes to start diving league

China hopes to capitalize on the success of its gold-medal Olympic divers by launching a professional diving league later this year.

BEIJING —

China hopes to capitalize on the success of its gold-medal Olympic divers by launching a professional diving league later this year.

Chinese divers won seven of the eight gold medals available in diving at last year's Beijing Olympics. The divers are some of the country's best-known athletes, but lack a profile outside China.

"We think we can launch a new form of diving competition - the Diving League - to make the sport more competitive and attractive," Zhou Jihong told the state-run news agency Xinhua.

Zhou won China's first Olympic diving gold medal at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics and is a leader of the Chinese team.

"I am aware of the various challenges, such as sponsorship, venues and promotion," Zhou said. She said details of the league had not been finalized, but said it was expected to run for two weeks in December.

She said non-Chinese divers would also be invited to compete.

"Our target is to further develop the sport, not just in China but around the world," she said.
