New York Islanders center Mike Sillinger underwent hip surgery for the second time in a year and will miss the remainder of the season, the team said Tuesday.

The 37-year-old forward, who played in only seven games this season, had hip resurfacing surgery in New York on Monday. Last February, Sillinger had a microfracture procedure on his hip that forced him to sit out the final 29 games of last season and the first 24 of this one.
In his brief time on the ice, Sillinger had two goals. He last appearance was Dec. 29 at the New York Rangers when he scored a goal. Sillinger sat out five games in December due to a strained groin and was a healthy scratch in another.
Sillinger is the second key player New York has ruled out for the season. Last week, the Islanders (13-29-5) - who own the NHL's worst record - lost goalie Rick DiPietro to a knee injury.
Sillinger, chosen No. 11 in the 1989 draft by the Detroit Red Wings, has played in 18 seasons for a record 12 teams. In 1,049 career NHL games, Sillinger has 240 goals and 308 assists.
He has spent three seasons with the Islanders, posting 42 goals and 87 points - his highest total with any NHL team - in 141 games.
